Cedar
Works was founded in Adams County by Jim Obenshain in 1976.
The availability of aromatic red cedar in the area made it
an ideal location for our company. Fencing was one of the
first items produced, but mailbox posts later became the
mainstay of the business. Sales gradually expanded from
local hardware stores to regional hardware
chains.
In 1985
the first cedar mailbox (the "wrapped" box) was sold. The
"Address of Distinction"
collection, a group of mailboxes, posts, address numbers and
other accessories added in 1987. In the late 80's, our
products were sold in many hardware and home center stores
east of the Rockies.
Cedar Works built a new production and warehouse facility in 1988 outside of Peebles, Ohio in the beautiful southern part of the state. A new product line, bird feeders and bird houses, combined with sales to new outlets brought much growth through the 90's.
Central Garden and Pet, a leader in the garden and pet industry, acquired Cedar Works in 2005 as part of the Garden Group under the Garden Décor unit.
Cedar Works continues to supply retailers in the US and Canada with cedar, plastic (and even recycled material) bird feeders and houses that respect the needs of birds –and the bird-feeding public.
Most of our products are made locally and all our products feature the quality and innovation that has been a Cedar Works trademark for over three decades.
